Ashwini Mudra

ashwini mudra (noun) from Sanskrit; ashwa, “horse,” +  mudra, “gesture”. So-called due to the resemblance between the anal contraction of a horse's sphincter after emptying its bowels

Ashwini Mudra is performed by contracting the anal sphincter muscles firmly and then relaxing them. It is observed that horses are adept in doing this. Ashwini Mudracomes from the Sanskrit word ‘Ashwa’ which means a horse and mudra means gesture or sign.  Ashwini mudra is very easy to perform and can be done during anytime and by any age group.

       How to do Ashwini Mudra

  1. .
  2. Sit in a comfortable pose.  It can be done even while standing or lying on ones back, but this is not recommended
  3. Relax the body and breathe normally.
  4. Contract the anal sphincter muscles and hold it for few seconds.
  5. Release the anal muscles and breathe normally for few seconds.
  6. Repeat this practice for as long as you are comfortable.

     Ashwini Mudra with breathing

        Ashwini mudra can also be practiced in tandem with the breath. In this variation, contract the sphincter muscles while breathing in and hold it. While releasing the sphincter muscles, let the breath out in a rush. Repeat this process for as long as you are comfortable.
